Chess is a strategic board game for two players that has been played for centuries. Here's what you need to know to get started.

Objective
The goal of chess is to checkmate your opponent's king. This means putting their king in a position where it is under attack (in "check") and has no legal move to escape capture. You cannot move into check and if in check, must move out of check on your next turn. If you cannot move out of check, it is "Checkmate", and the opposing person wins.

The Pieces and How They Move

• Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns.
• King: Moves one square in any direction.
• Queen: Moves any number of squares in any direction.
• Rook: Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
• Bishop: Moves any number of squares diagonally.
• Knight: Moves in an "L" shape two squares in one direction and one in another. Jumps over pieces.
• Pawn: Moves forward one square (two on first move). Captures diagonally forward.
